Jonathan Harker awakens in his bed uncertain if the Count carried him there after a terrifying night. Over several weeks he is manipulated into writing misleading letters home, has his escape attempts thwarted, witnesses the Count impersonating him in his clothes, and desperately climbs the castle wall into the Count's room where he discovers the vampire's daytime resting place in a box of earth. Harker ultimately fails to escape as the Szgany and Slovaks depart with the Count's boxes, leaving him trapped alone with the three vampire women.
