Mina records her daily life with Lucy in Whitby, including a frightening nighttime adventure where she finds Lucy sleepwalking in her nightdress to a churchyard seat on the East Cliff, where a dark figure with red eyes seems to bend over her. Over the following days Lucy's health fluctuates as she grows paler and weaker despite sleeping and eating well, while Mina worries about Jonathan and learns from a letter that he has been ill in a Budapest hospital after a severe brain fever. Meanwhile Dr. Seward describes Renfield's sudden religious mania and escape from the asylum to the neighboring Carfax estate, where he kneels before an unseen "Master" in the old chapel.
