Jonathan Harker travels from Munich through Eastern Europe toward Count Dracula's castle in Transylvania, recording his observations of the landscape, local customs, and superstitions. Locals at the Golden Krone Hotel in Bistritz warn him with fear about St. George's Eve and give him protective gifts and a crucifix before he boards the coach. At the Borgo Pass he is met by a mysterious driver in a calèche who takes him through wolf-filled darkness and strange blue flames to arrive at a vast ruined castle at midnight.
