Jonathan Harker arrives at Count Dracula's castle in the Carpathians after a terrifying nighttime journey. He is greeted by the Count, who shows him to his rooms, serves him supper without joining him, and engages in long conversations about England, his new estate, and local superstitions while displaying strange physical traits and behaviors. Over the following days Harker explores the castle, discovers it has no servants or mirrors, and realizes he is effectively a prisoner there after witnessing the Count cast no reflection.
